On January 17, 2015 the US Patent and Trademark Office reduced its filing fees for Federal Trademark Applications.
The fees for online filing of TEAS Plus was reduced by $50 to $225 per class of goods or services. The TEAS Reduced Fee (TEAS RF) Application is a new type of online application having a filing fee of $275 per class of goods or services. The TEAS Regular online application has a filing fee of $325 per class of goods or services.
The TEAS Plus application requires, among other things, that the identification of goods/services be taken directly from the Identification of Goods/Services online manual. The new TEAS RF application allows free form identification of goods/services. Both the TEAS Plus and TEAS RF require correspondence by email, rather than with paper correspondence. The use of the available identifications in the identification (ID) of Goods/Services online manual has been found to be restrictive and not well suited to many client’s trademarks. Unless the goods/services fit well into the existing online ID manual, the extra online filing fee for the TEAS RF application is worthwhile. The TEAS Regular application has the features of the TEAS RF but does not require correspondence by email. Many old school trademark attorneys preferred paper correspondence because of the possibility of non-receipt of email correspondence.
